This body of work originated with a University brief in 2004 to photograph a ‘football sized object' with a single light source. After much experimentation it was found that back-lighting a small transparent beach ball produced a strong and vivid, eyecatching photograph, and the project has evolved from there.

Essentially the aim has been to make abstract images using these kitsch, everyday, essentially disposable toys. Various experimental variations on the basic idea have been shot over the years; shooting in the studio, outdoors, multiple-exposure still life and incorporating the theme into portraiture shoots.

However the stronger images always tend to be the ones shot close-up in the studio against dark backdrops, sticking to the restriction of one light source. The project is ongoing, working towards a possible exhibition, and has recently seen a development where photos were shot at night on location at the coast in Wales.
